Keys to Successful Strategic Planning

Posted on

Dear Horned Frogs,

One of my passions is strategic planning. I like thinking big, envisioning the future, and figuring out where we want to go and how we’ll get there. I enjoy working with people from different backgrounds and perspectives and learning from their experiences and insights. Above all, I enjoy the entrepreneurial and innovative spirit that strategic planning brings out in a community.

Knowing this, I’m sure you can imagine my enthusiasm when the Board of Trustees gave the charge to develop a new strategic plan for TCU. (In case you missed it, you can read the February 7 announcement from Chancellor Boschini and me to the campus community about this here.)

The charge to write the next chapter of the TCU story is a journey we will go on together – and I believe these approaches are key to leading us to our desired destination:

  1. Guided by values: The TCU Values project resulted in four clear, distinct words and descriptions that communicate and represent the values that define who we are as a university. Values are like a compass, ensuring our decisions and plans align with our mission and culture. For our strategic planning to be successful, we must keep our TCU Values as our guiding North Star.
  2. Leveraging our strengths: As we look to the future of TCU and higher education, our ability to adapt to changing technology and market demands while holding steadfast to our values and mission will be the secret to our success. When we envision the future of TCU, we must be willing to ask tough questions, use our strengths to create new advantages and commit to carrying forward the tradition of innovation that has led TCU to the position we are in today.
  3. Inclusive process: Including all stakeholders is paramount to successful strategic planning. All TCU community members will have opportunities to participate, including submitting feedback through the Share Your Idea form, engaging at a spring town hall meeting*, and responding to the upcoming survey, to name a few.

TCU became the nationally recognized university we are today because those who came before us invested the time, energy and passion required to envision the future and plan for success. Now, it is our turn.

Let’s continue the journey – together.

Go Frogs!
